Week 16 RB Sleepers and Landmines

by , and • December 20, 2018

Each week, as we prepare to make some difficult lineup decisions, our team, which includes Rob Willette, Ryan McDowell, and Sal Leto, will bring you a few sleepers and landmines for each position. Our sleeper picks could be on your waiver wire or a low-priced DFS target or could simply be going overlooked this week. On the other hand, our landmine players are getting attention, too much attention. These are players we feel are being overvalued and overpriced and would avoid for this week.

Jamaal Williams $5,300

The Packers lost starting RB Aaron Jones last week with an injury and he has now been placed on the injured reserve list. That leaves fellow second-year RB Jamaal Williams as the starter for the final two games. This week, Williams gets the Jets subpar defense after his surprising RB1 performance against the Bears, including a touchdown run. It is no surprise, but in the eight games Williams has played without Jones, his rushing attampts, rushing yards and fantasy scoring all see significant increases. – Ryan McDowell

Kallen Ballage $3,900

Adam Gase’s use of Kenyan Drake is puzzling. Drake has touch totals of 9, 7, and 4 the past three weeks, with the 4 touch game coming when Frank Gore left early. But this is not a blurb about Drake; this is just to set the tone for how little Gase trusts Drake. Enter Kallen Ballage, who touched the ball 13 times in relieft of Gore in Minnesota. While much of his production came on a well-blocked long run to start the second half, Ballage operated as the clear lead back and figures to earn a majority of the work this weekend with Gore out for the season. The last time we saw Jacksonville on the road, they were getting immolated by Derrick Henry and his bruising style. While Ballage is not the back Henry is and has his share of warts, he runs hard and has the breakaway speed to hit a big one at moment’s notice. While an untrustworthy option given the mercurial nature of the Miami offense, Ballage is an affordable addition with flex appeal in Week 16. – Rob Willette

Melvin Gordon $7,800

The Chargers are expected to have starting RB Melvin Gordon back in action after missing three games, though he faces a difficult matchup against the Ravens and coming off the knee injury that forced him from the lineup. Baltimore has allowed the third-fewest rushing yards in the league and the second-fewest fantasy points. In your championship game, you still have to roll with Gordon if he’s active but the injury combined with the tough matchup should change our expectations. – Ryan McDowell

Leonard Fournette $7,000

Who really knows what is going on in Jacksonville. In a game which was close until the end, Fournette only earned 14 touches against Washington, taking a backseat for much of the second half. It is puzzling usage for the man the Jaguars have built their offense around, and seems to indicate either Fournette’s health is in question or Jacksonville really wants to see what they have in David Williams. Both are worrying developments, and make the man many tabbed their RB1 a risky play for championship week, even in a beautiful matchup against a Dolphins defense which just helped awaken a moribund Minnesota running game. – Rob Willette
