Week 5 TE Sleepers and Landmines

by , and • October 6, 2018

Each week, as we prepare to make some difficult lineup decisions, our team, which includes Rob Willette, Ryan McDowell, and Sal Leto, will bring you a few sleepers and landmines for each position. Our sleeper picks could be on your waiver wire or a low-priced DFS target or could simply be going overlooked this week. On the other hand, our landmine players are getting attention, too much attention. These are players we feel are being overvalued and overpriced and would avoid for this week.

SLEEPERS

Austin Hooper $4,100

Falcons TE Austin Hooper will always have a limited ceiling but this is a matchup to exploit. The Steelers are allowing the most fantasy points in the league to the tight end spot and Hooper has been more of a factor in the Atlanta offense this year. His snap rate is up to 84% this year from 77% a year ago. With both teams struggling on defense, this could be another shootout which would benefit everyone in the game. – Ryan McDowell

C.J. Uzomah $3,800

A week ago I had Tyler Eifert in this spot and it was looking good with 4-38-1 before a nasty season ending injury. Uzomah was playing a role already in this offense managing 28th overall while splitting time with Eifert and Tyler Kroft. Andy Dalton has long loved throwing to his tight ends with 30% of his career touchdown passes to the position. C.J. has logged more snaps than all other tight ends with 159 on the season and looks to be the one to see his role expanded. The Dolphins haven’t given up a big game yet to a tight end this season but in my opinion this team was a fake 3-0 and after coming back to earth a week ago I can see the cracks starting to show. – Sal Leto

David Njoku $4,200

A popular pick to make a second year jump, David Njoku has yet to make his presence felt in 2018. Despite a forgettable statline on the season, Njoku is trending upwards after earning 7 targets in Baker Mayfield’s starting debut and posting a respectable 5/52 line. Jarvis Landry remains the target hot in Cleveland, but the second option in the passing game is wide open given Antonio Callaway’s up and down play. Mayfield’s presence lifts the outlook for this whole offense, and Njoku could be the main beneficiary. – Rob Willette

LANDMINES

Travis Kelce $7,100

It is difficult to get away from Chiefs TE Travis Kelce in seasonal leagues especially given the carnage across the league at the tight end position but in DFS I’d be looking for other options. This Jaguars matchup should worry Kelce owners. Jacksonville allows the third-fewest fantasy points in the league to the tight end position. They’ve already shut down Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (3.5 fantasy points) and Giants TE Evan Engram (3.8). – Ryan McDowell

Ben Watson $4,600

What ever happened to the days when the tight end was prominent in the Saints offense? In 2017 the TE group finished with the worst stats in the league and this year they find themselves in the lower half of the league again. After dropping an open touchdown a last game Watson has zero touchdowns on the season and a week ago was out played by Josh Hill. In his 14th season it just might be time that Hill over takes him. Washington has kept all tight ends to 45 yards or less so far on the season with just one touchdown relinquished. – Sal Leto

Also, Travis Kelce $7,100

In the year 2018, there are few defenses which are strong enough to give you pause when enterting your starting lineups. The Jacksonville Jaguars, however, are one such rare unit. The Jaguars have given up the third-fewest points to opposing tight ends and completely eliminated Rob Gronkowski in Week 2. The Chiefs have a more diverse set of weapons than the Patriots had in Week 2, and Kelce is not going to benches in season-long leagues given his target share and the dearth of talent at the position, but we might have to settle for more of a floor game this week. – Rob Willette
